Location:Library Grounds

Original and traditional Americana music from New England, southern Appalachia and the Balkans.

“One of the best singers in music” (T Bone Burnett), Tim Eriksen's imaginative and emotionally charged take on Americana music has led to work with the likes of Alison Krauss and Jack White, and his song “I Wish The Wars Were All Over” was chosen by Joan Baez to be her last recorded musical statement on the 2018 farewell album “Whistle Down The Wind." Known as the frontman of the legendary Cordelia’s Dad and contributor to films including Cold Mountain, his upcoming recordings include a follow up to his Grammy nominated collaboration with Afro-Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, and a duet with “the queen of Romani/Gypsy music” Esma Red┼żepova. A longtime advocate of community singing who has helped spread American “shape-note” music around the globe, Tim will be joined by musical friends including local shape-note singers who recorded with him on the Cold Mountain soundtrack.

Free for everyone!
Picnics, blankets and low chairs welcome.
Funded by the Friends of Forbes and community donations.
In case of bad weather, the concert will move indoors.

Title:Our Community Sing 2018
Date:Sunday, September 23, 2018
Time:5:00pm - 7:00pm
Location:Library Grounds
Categories:125th Anniversary Celebration, Adult Events, Children's Events, Local History, Music Participation, One-Time Events, Teen Events
Description:

Forbes Library is beginning plans to commemorate its 125th anniversary. It is also the 100th anniversary of the end of “the war to end all wars,” so we invite the community to gather on the library lawn to raise spirits, support peaceful resolutions of conflicts, and confirm our sense of community by singing together.

The large group sing will combine voices of individual members of the public and local choral groups, choirs, and informal singing groups. Everyone will learn the same 3 songs and come together to sing in unison on the lawn, much in the way Forbes Library selects a book each year for the entire community to read and then to gather and discuss.  This will not be a performance, but a participatory, community event.

Northampton partners who have already joined in support of the project include Historic Northampton, Northampton Senior Services, Northampton Community Arts Trust, A.P.E. Ltd., Northampton Community Music Center, and Smith College.

This year’s sing is set for September 23, around sunset and moonrise. It is still in the planning stages. Please send suggestions and comments to Faith Kaufmann, Forbes Library Arts & Music Librarian, 413-587-1013 or arts@forbeslibrary.org.  This listing will be updated with more information about Our Community Sing as it develops.
